Wanderers wrapped up the regular League One season with a 3-2 victory against Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.
Shola Shoretire opened the scoring but the visitors hit back through Luca Hoole’s header from close range.
Dan Nlundulu and Aaron Morley were both on target after the break to give the Whites a commanding lead, but John Marquis pulled one back five minutes from time.
Changes pay off
There were a few raised eyebrows when Ian Evatt opted to make eight changes from the side that beat Fleetwood last weekend.
But his decisions were justified as the Whites secured the three points while keeping the likes of James Trafford, Conor Bradley, Kyle Dempsey and Dion Charles fresh for what is to come.
Ricardo Santos and Eoin Toal also got some valuable minutes under their belts in the backline after returning to action.
The only blow was Gethin Jones’ injury, with the versatile defender clutching his hamstring after setting up the opener.
Big moment for Shoretire
The Manchester United loanee has shown glimpses of what he is capable of since his arrival at the UniBol but has struggled to nail down a place in the side.
Shoretire got himself in the right place to score during the first half, opening his Bolton account on his 16th appearance for the club.
He was unlucky not to double his tally after the break, with Rovers goalkeeper James Belshaw making a fine stop low to his left.
The youngster seemed to enjoy playing alongside Victor Adeboyejo and will take plenty of confidence from his display heading into the play-offs.
Nlundulu off the mark
The Southampton loanee also managed his first goal for Wanderers, finding the bottom corner with a pinpoint strike after MJ Williams’ long ball had caused panic in the Rovers defence.
Nlundulu has had a couple of injury setbacks over the past few months but is capable of popping up with moments of quality in the final third.
His physical attributes are also a useful weapon for the Whites and could come in handy against Barnsley, either from the start or off the bench.
Cameron Jerome also looked lively during the final half hour and the squad will benefit from his experience as they aim to go all the way in the play-offs.
Building momentum
Wanderers have now won back-to-back games and will approach the semi-final first leg with plenty of confidence.
Barnsley finished fourth in the table – five points ahead of Evatt’s men – but that all counts for nothing now.
The Tykes’ preparation hasn’t been ideal, losing 2-0 against Peterborough at Oakwell after goals from Jonson Clarke-Harris and Jack Taylor.
Michael Duff’s side are now winless in their last three matches and will likely have to cope with a bumper crowd at the UniBol next weekend.
