Fresh from the Chair’s Trail Race, Jo McManus and Rachel Stevens travelled to Salford for the first instalment of the Media City series.

The race series takes place on the last Thursday of each month between April and September and participants can complete a 5k or 10k race.

McManus and Stevens both opted for the 5k race, which is two laps of Media City. Starting outside the BBC television studios, runners head along Salford Quays, past the Lowry Theatre, the Imperial War Museum North, the ITV studies and ending back at the BBC studios.

This is a fast and flat race, the only undulating part of the course is the bridges across the Manchester Ship Canal.

The final stretch of the race starts on the Media City footbridge, the descent of the bridges allows runners to complete a fast sprint to the finish line.

McManus obtained a 5k personal-best time to complete the course in 21:54 for seventh female and second in her age category. Stevens followed in 26:26 and was the 18th female and sixth in her age category.

Elsewhere, Tom Grundy completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Race. This race has been described as a ‘Marathon with Mountains’ and traverses the Yorkshire Dales mountains of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

The race covers 24 miles with 5,200 feet of ascent and takes competitors to a height of 723 metres above sea level - and Grundy completed the race in an astonishing 4:51:03.
