Wanderers recorded another important three points following a 1-0 win against Shrewsbury at the UniBol.
Josh Sheehan got the decisive goal just after the hour mark, finding the top corner with a stunning strike from 25 yards.
The Whites could have had more goals, with Conor Bradley and Dion Charles both denied by the woodwork.
Sheehan gets the plaudits
It was starting to seem like it might be one of those days for Wanderers until Sheehan broke the deadlock.
The creative midfielder has already proven how dangerous he can be from those areas and punished the Shrewsbury defence for backing off.
Sheehan has been in good form since returning to the side and compliments Aaron Morley in the middle of the pitch.
Kyle Dempsey’s energy was also key for the Whites and he went close on a couple of occasions during the first half.
Marosi heroics
The result is all that matters at this stage of the season, although Wanderers will wonder how they didn’t score more against the Shrews.
Shrewsbury goalkeeper Marko Marosi made impressive stops to deny Dempsey, Victor Adeboyejo and Elias Kachunga, with the woodwork also coming to the visitors’ rescue.
While the ‘keeper deserves lots of credit for his display, the Whites have perhaps been guilty of not being ruthless in the final third since their Wembley triumph against Plymouth.
Ian Evatt will be hoping to see the goals flow again heading into the final three games of the campaign.
MJ eases worries
MJ Williams was excellent at the heart of defence, making several important tackles during the opening 45 minutes.
The former Liverpool youngster’s performances of late have eased any fears about Ricardo Santos and Eoin Toal’s injuries.
Williams has made a seamless transition back into the centre-back role, which he hadn’t played since his Rochdale days.
His strength is also a big asset for Wanderers and could be crucial in the next couple of games against sides who pose a physical threat.
Another step forward
The Whites are now up fifth in the League One table following Peterborough’s 3-0 defeat against Ipswich.
However, Evatt’s men are only above Derby on goal difference after the Rams beat Burton 1-0 at Pride Park.
A win against Accrington on Tuesday night would put Wanderers in a strong position as they aim to secure a play-off spot and give themselves a chance of returning to Wembley.
But it will not be easy against John Coleman’s side, who are in desperate need of points as they fight to beat the drop.
