Wanderers return to Wembley after a 12-year wait this weekend when they take on Plymouth in the Papa Johns Trophy final, but what happened to Bolton’s last side at the historic venue?
Jussi Jaaskelainen
Widely recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in Wanderers’ modern history, Jaaskelainen went on to reunite with Sam Allardyce at West Ham. He also had spells at Wigan and ATK before hanging up his boots in 2018.
Gretar Steinsson
Another popular figure among Bolton supporters, Steinsson finished his playing career in Turkey. He is currently serving as performance director at Tottenham and also held roles at Everton and Fleetwood.
Paul Robinson
Had a six-year spell at Birmingham after leaving Bolton in 2012 and is now working as first-team coach at Millwall as part of Gary Rowett’s backroom staff. The Lions are sixth in the Championship table as they aim to win promotion to the top flight.
Gary Cahill
A fan favourite at Wanderers, Cahill went on to have a stellar career with Chelsea and England, enjoying success both domestically and in Europe. Also had stints at Crystal Palace and Bournemouth before calling time on his career earlier this season.
Zat Knight
Headed overseas with Colorado Rapids after leaving Wanderers in 2014 and returned to England the following year to finish his career at Reading.
Fabrice Muamba
Had his career cut short after suffering a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup quarter-final against Tottenham in 2012. Muamba is now back at Bolton as a youth coach and has rediscovered his love for the game.
Martin Petrov
Left Wanderers in January 2013 and had a stint in Spain with Espanyol before returning to former club CSKA Sofia. Announced his retirement from the professional game in 2014.
Chung-Yong Lee
Spent three-and-a-half-years at Crystal Palace after leaving Wanderers and also had a stint in Germany with Bochum. Lee is still playing at the age of 34 with Ulsan Hyundai in his native South Korea.
Johan Elmander
Had a spell in Turkey with Galatasaray after leaving the North West but returned to England with Norwich several years later. Also had a stint at Danish club Brondby before hanging up his boots in 2018.
Kevin Davies
A prolific goalscorer for the Whites, Davies went on to have a two-year spell at Preston before announcing his retirement in 2015. He remains involved in the sport and set up a football agency several years ago.
Ivan Klasnic
Finished his career with Mainz and is now also working as an agent. Was seriously ill in hospital back in 2016 after a kidney transplant failed, and he has since won a 10-year legal battle over damage he suffered while playing for Werder Bremen.
Subs: Adam Bogdan, Marcos Alonso, David Wheater, Matt Taylor, Mark Davies, Tamir Cohen, Rodrigo Moreno
