Wanderers secured a precious point against League One leaders Sheffield Wednesday following a spirited display at Hillsborough.

The hosts went in front when Lee Gregory’s deflected strike from inside the box found a way past James Trafford.

But the Whites hit back through Victor Adeboyejo nine minutes before the break, tucking home after a neat move down the right wing.

Penalty shout

One of the major talking points after the game was Dion Charles’ penalty appeal during the second half, which was waved away by referee Sam Purkiss.

Charles had managed to get in behind the Wednesday backline and went down in the box after tangling with Aden Flint.

Ian Evatt described it as a “big moment” in the game and claimed that Flint even admitted it was the wrong call after the final whistle.

While it will likely prove to be a valuable point for the Whites, there is also a feeling that it could have been even more.

Morale boost

Evatt will be delighted with the character his side showed against the Owls following a tricky spell in League One.

Wanderers had picked up one point from their previous three games but can now head into next month’s Wembley final against Plymouth with belief.

The Whites also ensured they maintained their position in the play-off places regardless of this weekend’s results.

The gap to seventh-place Wycombe is now up to four points and the Chairboys face a tough test against Barnsley later today.

On the scoresheet

Adeboyejo has now scored twice since his move from Burton in the January window, and his tally for the season is up to 15.

The 25-year-old got himself in the right place to meet Gethin Jones’ clever cut-back and had a slight bit of luck with a deflection.

He also caused the Wednesday defence plenty of problems with his strength and pressing alongside Charles in attack.

Switching clubs midway through the season can be tough, but Adeboyejo now seems to be adapting to Wanderers’ style of play and showing some exciting signs.

Sheehan shines in midfield

Josh Sheehan’s inclusion in the starting line-up ahead of Aaron Morley caused plenty of debate among supporters ahead of kick-off.

However, the Welshman played an important role in the middle of the pitch despite the threat of Barry Bannan.

Sheehan has had to build up his sharpness this season following a lengthy injury lay-off, but his performance against the Owls served as a reminder of what he is capable of.

The 27-year-old’s current Bolton deal is set to expire in the summer and he will be hoping to make an impact in the final stages of the campaign.
