WANDERERS have completed their first signing of the transfer window by bringing in Hull City wing-back Randell Williams on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The 25-year-old can play on either flank and goes straight into the squad to face Plymouth Argyle on Saturday at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Williams, who arrives on an undisclosed fee, has made 20 appearances for the Tigers since moving north at the start of last season but had been made surplus to requirement by manager Liam Rosenior.

He is best known for a successful spell at Exeter City, where he scored nine goals in 87 appearances over the course of three seasons in League Two.

Evatt explained what he would bring to the squad.

“Randell has blistering speed and will give us a real attacking threat down that left side,” he said.

“He is multi-dimensional and can play left, right, as a forward in a 4-3-3 or as a wing-back in our system, but predominantly he has been brought in to mirror on the left hand side what we are getting from Conor Bradley on the right.”

With Jack Iredale out for up to four months, Wanderers do have a decision to make at left wing-back for the visit of Plymouth on Saturday.

Evatt insists the deal to sign Williams has not been accelerated because of Iredale’s injury but added that his new signing may need to be “brought up to speed” because of his lack of recent games.

His last appearance for the Tigers was on October 16 against Birmingham City as a substitute and his last start was in August, away at West Brom.

“He is a player we have looked at for a long time and one I admired when he was at Exeter before going to the Championship,” Evatt explained.

“He has played games at Hull but they have changed the policy of what they are doing there, change of ownership, change of manager, and Randell has become available. We beat other teams to his signature.

“He offers us some real dynamic pace and speed down the left and an attacking threat. But I also feel we need to gather and gain more dribbling quality, especially against teams who are going to sacrifice and go into a low block. We need someone who can battle and beat players in a one-on-one duel and get crosses in the box, create for us, just as well on the left as Conor does on the right.”

Wanderers will complete their second signing of the window on Monday, with Southampton striker Dan Nlundulu joining on loan for the rest of the season.
