Wanderers are closing in on the loan signing of Southampton striker Dan Nlundulu, The Bolton News understands.

The 23-year-old is believed to have picked a move to Bolton ahead of continuing his loan spell with Cheltenham Town.

Ian Evatt had previously looked at signing the former England youth international in the summer of 2021 but now looks like making him the first new signing of the January window.

Nlundulu made 17 appearances for Southampton in 2020/21, including 13 in the Premier League, and scored his first senior goal against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup.

He was loaned out to Lincoln and Cheltenham the following season and then moved back to the Robins this term, where he has scored five times in 26 appearances.

Nlundulu impressed in the Robins’ 1-0 win against Bolton in October and has been a mainstay in Wade Elliott’s side but he has turned down the chance to stay in favour of a deal with Bolton, which could be made permanent in the summer.

Another of Evatt’s previous targets, Macauley Bonne, has been released by Queen’s Park Rangers.

The striker, who cost the Loftus Road club £2million from Charlton in October 2020 was on the wanted list at Bolton in the previous transfer window, but a deal could not be sorted in time.

Charlton are reportedly interested in bringing him back to the Valley, while League Two promotion hopefuls Leyton Orient – another of his former clubs - have also been linked.

Wanderers are in the market to sign two attacking players in January as a matter of priority.
