Daniel Nlundulu has been told to decide whether he wants to sign on loan for Wanderers for the rest of the season or stay at Cheltenham Town.
Southampton have told the 23-year-old striker they will exercise a recall clause in his contract this month if he decides he wants to move to the North West.
Nlundulu played for Cheltenham in a 2-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers on New Year’s Day and has scored five goals in his 26 appearances for the League One side this season.
Ian Evatt tried to sign him before but lost out to Lincoln City, shortly after the club’s promotion from League Two.
Speaking after the 3-0 win at Barnsley, Evatt said the club’s transfer business was moving in the right direction.
“We are still progressing and having discussions,” he said. “There is still work to be done on all of our targets, really, but things are looking positive.
“We have had a bid accepted for a player now, and that is progressing all the time.
“There have also been bids for one or two of the lads who haven’t played as much football as they would want.
“It is going to be a busy month but one we have to get right.”
Asked specifically about Nlundulu, the Bolton boss added: “I don’t want to comment on anyone else’s players, it isn’t my way of doing things.
“We will see how the window unfolds.”
If Wanderers are successful in signing Nlundulu on loan they would be given the opportunity to make the deal a permanent one in the summer.
