EFL pundit Aaron McLean reckons all three of Shrewsbury’s goals against Wanderers “could have been avoided”.

Rob Street opened the scoring in the second minute but the Whites hit back through a brace from Dion Charles, with the second coming from the penalty spot after Dapo Afolayan had been brought down in the box.

But Christian Saydee got the hosts back on level terms 11 minutes from time and Chey Dunkley completed the comeback.

Wanderers were without a plethora of players on the day, with Nelson Khumbeni and Gerald Sithole promoted from the B Team to make up the numbers on the bench.

But former Peterborough and Hull defender McLean says they will be disappointed with their defending in the final stages.

Speaking as a pundit on the EFL highlights show, he said: “I think all of the goals could have been avoided.

“When you look back – having taken the lead and gone 2-1 up – they would have hoped to be able to see the game out.

“They didn’t, and the goals they conceded were down to poor defending, poor marking and poor decision making.

“That has to change if they are to progress and move up the table.”

Wanderers remain fifth in the League One table despite the result, although fourth-place Barnsley now have a game in hand after their match at Oxford was called off due to a frozen pitch.

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury are up to 10th and are now only two points off the play-offs heading into the busy Christmas period.

Ian Evatt’s men are back in action on Tuesday night when they welcome Manchester United Under-21s to the UniBol in the Papa Johns Trophy last 16 (KO 7:45pm).
