Didier Drogba has revealed the unknowing part Bolton Wanderers played in Chelsea’s Premier League title-winning triumph in 2005.
The former Ivory Coast striker recalled the problems Jose Mourinho’s side had defending set pieces against the Whites when the two sides met at Stamford Bridge in November that season.
Chelsea had led the game 2-0 with goals from Damien Duff and Tiago but Sam Allardyce’s men battled back with a Kevin Davies header and then a late goal from Tunisian Radhi Jaidi.
Speaking as a pundit on BBC Sport, the panel were discussing set pieces in Ghana’s 3-2 victory against South Korea, where Drogba remarked: “When I was at Chelsea we played against Bolton and we were winning 2-0 with two minutes to go. They had a free kick from halfway, we were dropping so deep, they played two balls, [got the] second ball and scored twice.
“We drew the game and from then we learned. From that game our line was so high that we were not in danger anymore.”
Chelsea would go on to lift the Premier League trophy, clinching top spot with a 2-0 win at the Reebok Stadium on April 30 with both goals coming from Frank Lampard.
It was the Blues’ first title in 50 years while Wanderers would clinch sixth spot, qualifying for the UEFA Cup for the first time.
