Ian Evatt hopes Wanderers’ squad depth will continue to pay off – and reckons there is still more to come from his side.
Kieran Sadlier and Josh Sheehan made a big impact off the bench during the 2-1 win at Fleetwood over the weekend, getting an assist each.
Evatt is delighted with the options at his disposal but admits picking the team continues to be a challenge, with several players knocking on the door.
“That is not the first time we have managed to influence games from the bench and win them,” said the Bolton boss.
“The problem for me is that when that happens, I cause myself problems because everyone thinks they should be starting.
“But that is just football. We have got a really strong squad of players and we make decisions based on what the game is going to be like.
“Following that, we know we can impact it from the bench if needs be. We managed to do that on Saturday, and two very good assists from Kieran and from Josh.”
The Whites have picked up seven points from the trips to Accrington, Cambridge and Fleetwood – a big improvement on last season.
Evatt added: “My job is to have progression and to keep moving forwards at this football club.
“We lost at Accrington last year, we lost at Fleetwood last year, we lost at Cambridge last year, but we have come away with two wins and a draw.
“Obviously, Saturday was probably the best performance of all those games, but that is significant progression from last season. That is what we are asking for.
“We are in the top six, that is our aim and ambition. We are not shy in saying that. But there is a long, long way to go yet and I still think there is lots more to come from this team.”
Wanderers’ next League One fixture isn’t until Friday, December 2 when they welcome Bristol Rovers to the UniBol.
When asked what his side’s schedule will look like during the break, Evatt explained: “Hard, tough, intense. That is our only way really.
“When we play with speed, tempo and energy like you saw second half (at Fleetwood), we are really difficult to manage and contain. Lots more of that.
“Lots more hard work on the training ground, trying to improve all aspects of our game. Then hopefully we will be ready for Bristol Rovers, but first we have a cup match we want to win tomorrow night.”
