Forest Green boss Ian Burchnall believes Wanderers are the “best team in possession” in League One.
The Whites suffered a 1-0 defeat at the New Lawn, with Connor Wickham getting the decisive goal during the first half.
Dion Charles, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Kieran Sadlier all wasted chances during an improved second-half performance.
Burchnall was delighted with his side’s work out of possession and described the win as “a massive result”.
He told the club’s YouTube channel: “Brilliant team performance. From start to finish, I thought we were excellent. A massive result really for us.
“I thought our shape without the ball was brilliant the whole way through the game. It gave us a good platform to play.
“The goal we scored is a great goal, a really well worked goal. We had a big chance before that with Armani Little.
“Second half, we fell a little bit deeper which is normal. I think we have to respect that Bolton are probably, in my opinion, the best team in possession in the league.
“I think they are excellent. We really had to work hard to deny them space and try to deny them opportunities.
“Towards the end when Josh March comes on, he counters really well and we got a good balance today I think.”
Wanderers have now lost back-to-back league matches for the second time this season but remain in the top six.
Forest Green are up to 21st place, having won three of their opening 12 matches as they aim to build on last season’s promotion from League Two.
The Whites are back in action on Saturday, October 15 when they welcome Barnsley to the UniBol (KO 3pm).
