Morecambe boss Derek Adams has paid tribute to Simon Farnworth, who is leaving the club after 13 years of service.

The former Wanderers goalkeeper is stepping down from his position as head physio at the Mazuma Stadium.

Farnworth began his playing career at Burnden Park and went on to make more than 130 appearances for the Whites.

He also had spells with Bury, Preston North End and Wigan Athletic among others before hanging up his boots.

The 58-year-old then joined the backroom staff at Wigan as a physio before taking up a role in Liverpool’s Academy.

Farnworth has been at Morecambe since 2009 but now feels it is the right time to step away, according to Adams.

The Shrimps chief had nothing but positive things to say about the former Bolton man and says he is leaving “big shoes to fill”.

“Simon is leaving after the Barnsley game [on October 22],” he told The Lancaster Guardian.

“He has been a very good servant to the football club, but he wants to concentrate on his private practice away from the game and wants to spend more time with his family as well.

“It is a full-on job nowadays. I work in a way where we are in more days than other managers were in.

“They are big shoes to fill. He has been here for many years, he has been an ex-player and then a physio – and we wish him well.”

Morecambe are currently 23rd in the League One table, having won just one of their opening 10 fixtures since the start of the campaign.

Wanderers recorded a 1-0 victory when the sides met at the UniBol back in August, with Liverpool loanee Conor Bradley getting the decisive goal six minutes before the break.
