Ian Evatt insists the potential arrival of Liverpool prospect Owen Beck will not mean exits at Wanderers on deadline day.

The Bolton News understands a deal to sign the Wales Under-21 international left-back on loan is close after a spell with Portuguese club Famalicão was terminated this afternoon.

Beck would be a third option on the left for Bolton, with Jack Iredale and Declan John having shared duties thus far.

Evatt confirmed there was an interest in the Flint-born defender, with Liverpool already impressed by the progress shown by Anfield team-mate Conor Bradley during his short time in League One.

“He (Beck) is a player we’re aware of and he is a player that we like,” said the Bolton boss. “Obviously we have monitored his progress, like we have Conor.

“Our relationship is very, very, good and we understand exactly what they have got, who they have got and how they would affect what we do.

“There is work to be done with that one but he is a player that we are aware of and we are monitoring, so we will see what happens.”

Asked whether Beck’s arrival on loan would have a knock-on effect on either Iredale or John, the Wanderers boss said it simply gave him more flexibility.

“What we are trying to do is give ourselves competition, but different competition, and I think if we bought in a left sided player, it would be different to what Declan is and different to what Jack Iredale is.

“Jack Iredale for instance still has that ability to drop into centre back and build progressively from there. It’s not like we are trying to replace anybody, I think we are just trying to add different options to the squad.”

Beck has already played first team football at Liverpool, appearing in the Papa Johns Trophy for the Under-21s and in two Carabao Cup games last season against Preston North End and Leicester City.

He was loaned out to Portugal to gain more first team experience in the summer but returns after just 46 days, with a spell at Bolton deemed more suitable for his development.

Wanderers have not ruled out further additions on deadline day and have been linked with a move for QPR striker Macauley Bonne.

Evatt was more circumspect about that particular speculation, adding: “I’m not going to speak about other people’s players, but we are constantly monitoring situations elsewhere and we are always looking to improve.”
