WANDERERS’ performance against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night has opened up a world of new options in the transfer market.

Ian Evatt’s phone did not stop ringing yesterday with offers of players who are available for loan or on permanent deals before next Thursday’s deadline.

Though beaten in the end by Villa, the Whites earned plaudits for going toe-to-toe with the Premier League men and, says Evatt, the televised games has caught the attention of a few folk in football.

“We have been offered players that, honestly, I did not think we would be capable of getting,” he shrugged. “Financially, they may not be right for us but the fact they watched us last night, saw a bit of how we play, it has put us in a shop window where people want to come and be a part of it.

“They saw the fanbase, saw the stadium rocking, and it is great that it appeals to people.

“We are looking to be active but we can’t make promises.”

Evatt has conceded that if Wanderers are to get busy in the transfer market, they may also move on other members of the squad to avoid over-congestion.

Asked if he has had players knocking on his door and asking for more game time, he said: “I get that all the time!

“Agents being agents tend, before the club itself gets to know, to tout them round left, right, and centre saying: ‘They’re available’. And it is just absolute nonsense.

“There is nobody that we would really say we want to leave or we want to go out on loan, but I also understand that players want game time and we can’t give it to everybody so we have to be fair.

“If someone comes and knocks on my door saying: ‘I’d really like to leave, I’d like to go there,’ then we’ll look at it. If it is right for us, that’s the key, if it’s right for us, then we may allow that to happen and then look to strengthen.”

Evatt met with technical performance director Chris Markham earlier this week to discuss potential transfer moves and though he believes the squad is strong enough to improve on last season’s finish in League One, he refuses to rule out strengthening it further.

“We are always looking to improve. In terms of where we are at right now,” he said. “I think we have got a competitive strong squad, but there is always room for improvement. But the room for improvement has to come with that sustainability piece, with the football club that we are trying to build, it’s as simple as that.

“We’re not going to put this club at risk or overspend of have players sitting there just for the sake of having numbers. If we bring people in, there may be people going out and that’s not for financial reasons but really to balance the squad. Today we’ve been offered some really good players, all of a sudden you get excited again.

“The end of transfer windows whether we like them or loathe them, they are exciting and hopefully we can produce one or two bits of magic in this next week or so. If we don’t, fine, I’m happy, if we do then great.”
