DION Charles could be considered for a start in the Carabao Cup after Ian Evatt admitted it was “too soon” for him against Sheffield Wednesday.
The Northern Ireland international came off the bench in the second half and looked bright, having been out of action with a thigh injury since the opening day of the season.
Charles was unable to help Wanderers get back into the game, with Evatt’s side slipping to their first defeat in 14 games.
“It was a bit too soon (to start him) as he has only had two training days,” said the Bolton boss. “But it is great to have him back and we will see about him for Tuesday.”
Wanderers were not at their best against Wednesday, with their day going downhill after a mistake in possession by Ricardo Santos, which led to the opening goal.
George Byers eventually put the ball into the net – but it was the quick reaction of Barry Bannan which set Bolton on their heels.
The Owls went on to score a second goal through Liam Palmer just two minutes later, and speaking after the game Evatt was disappointed how his side’s defending had become so fragmented after Santos’s error.
“We had the chance to prevent the goal,” Evatt maintained. “It wasn’t the mistake that went in, but there was a passage of play after the mistake.
“Let’s not forget, mistakes are allowed to happen, especially when we are asking players to play this way and be brave on the ball. It’s how you react and respond to that mistake and I thought we had the chance to react better.
“We then had the chance to mark in the box and we didn’t do it and that cost us the goal.
“Off the back of that, we lost a bit of concentration and focus which led to a second. Good teams punish you when you’re not quite 100 per cent focused and today they punished us.”
