WANDERERS’ Carabao Cup second round tie against Aston Villa has been chosen for television coverage.
Sky Sports will screen the game on Tuesday, August 23 as Ian Evatt’s in-form side welcome Steven Gerrard’s Premier League outfit.
Bolton have won both previous meetings in the competition, with a memorable 5-4 aggregate victory at the semi-final stage in 2004 and a 2-0 win at Villa Park at the third round stage in 2011.
Supporters will recall the unforgettable 5-2 win against the Midlanders at the Reebok, which included Jay Jay Okocha’s physics-defying free kick.
Seven years later, goals from Chris Eagles and Gael Kakuta helped Owen Coyle’s side into the next round in a game remembered best for Stuart Holden’s man-of-the-match display on his return from long-term injury. It proved his only appearance of the season.
Wanderers have a long and storied history of games against Villa, having faced them on 165 occasions, the first of which was in 1888.
Their last meeting was in April 2019, a 2-0 defeat which confirmed relegation from the Championship for Phil Parkinson’s side, then in dire financial trouble under previous ownership.
