Former Wanderers defender Gretar Steinsson is reportedly set to be named as performance director at Tottenham Hotspur.

Steinsson spent four-and-a-half years at Bolton after joining from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar back in 2008.

The 40-year-old left the Whites following relegation from the Premier League in 2012 and finished his playing career in Turkey.

He returned to the UniBol last season to represent a team of legends managed by Sam Allardyce for Gethin Jones’ MND appeal.

After hanging up his boots, Steinsson had a spell as technical director at Fleetwood and more recently served as head of recruitment and development at Everton.

The former Iceland international left Goodison Park back in December after three years at the club and has now joined Tottenham, according to The Athletic.

He will reportedly oversee senior and youth levels and work closely with managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last term, securing Champions League football after finishing the season strongly.

The London club are also said to be close to appointing former Manchester City coach Simon Davies to a senior academy position.

Speaking back in 2017, Steinsson told The Bolton News: “I paid attention at all my former clubs. I got into the professional game late so I had a different perspective on things.

“I wanted to see what was happening in the analysis department or what they were doing in the medical room and I made a lot of good friends.

“At Bolton I was lucky to work with some of the very, very best in their field. When you can speak with people like Colin Harvey about football you cannot fail to learn.

"So maybe I look at things differently? I’m from Iceland. We tend to do that.”
