FOREST Green have announced that a unique technology inspired by “space missions” will be used for away supporters at the New Lawn next season.
The club has partnered with Nijhuis Saur Industries to introduce restrooms that will convert fans’ urine into fertiliser, which will then be used to maintain the pitch.
Rovers will be playing in the third tier next season after clinching the League Two title, climbing above Exeter on the final day.
The club has earned a reputation as the “greenest football club in the world” since chairman Dale Vince took charge back in 2010, implementing eco-friendly measures such as sustainable energy and an organic playing surface.
An official statement read: “We’re delighted to announce a brand-new partnership with Nijhuis Saur Industries (NSI) ahead of the 2022/23 season.
“NSI will provide restrooms and urine treatment facilities for the Away Fan Zone at The New Lawn.
“Their space mission-inspired closed loop technology will convert fans’ urine into clean water and a concentrated fertiliser product, both of which can be used to keep the pitch in top condition.
“The award-winning modular units will treat wastewater from the urinals through on-site physical treatment. The modules also have the potential for further treatment options of wastewater from the toilets and handwashing facilities to produce compost and flush water.”
Wanderers have only faced Forest Green twice in their history, with both games taking place during the 2020/21 campaign as Ian Evatt’s men clinched promotion back to the third tier.
Despite winning the league last season, Rovers boss Rob Edwards left to join Championship side Watford and has since been replaced by Ian Burchnall in the hot seat.
The club is now preparing for an increase in the number of away fans visiting the New Lawn, with the likes of Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich and Portsmouth usually backed in numbers on the road.
CEO Henry Staelens added: “The Away Fan Zone is a major focus for us over the summer as we head towards League One, where we will see a sizeable increase of fans at The New Lawn - we’re very pleased to have Nijhuis on board as part of that".
Wanderers will soon learn when they are heading to the New Lawn, with the League One fixture list scheduled to be released on Thursday, June 23.
Whites fans will not be able to purchase any meat products from the stadium but vegan alternatives such as pies and burgers are available.
