WANDERERS finished ninth in their first season back in League One, losing just five games since the turn of the year.
The Whites ended the campaign strongly, racking up wins against Doncaster, Accrington, Cheltenham and Fleetwood in the final stages.
Ian Evatt’s men were predicted to finish 12th at the start of the season, according to football statistics website FiveThirtyEight’s predicted table.
Wanderers’ final total of 73 points was nine more than the ‘data experts’ forecast before a ball had been kicked.
The biggest “over-performers” were Plymouth, who were predicted to finish in the drop zone but ended up narrowly missing out on a play-off place on the final day.
The likes of Wigan and Cambridge also comfortably surpassed their predicted positions, finishing first and 14th respectively.
Meanwhile, Burton and Lincoln were both predicted to make the top six but ended up 16th and 17th respectively in the final standings.
