AFTER diffusing the Gillingham bombardment, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson reckons Wanderers will feel more relaxed about the visit of Morecambe tonight.
Teams from the direct end of the League One spectrum had caused major problems for Ian Evatt’s men, but Saturday’s comprehensive win has given everyone in the Bolton dressing room a timely confidence boost.
Bodvarsson, who chipped in with the defensive effort and got his name on the scoresheet, reckons a lesson was learned at Priestfield.
“A lot of the teams in League One are physical, quite direct, and maybe that has been a bit of a problem for us this season, results-wise,” he told The Bolton News.
“But I think we did well against Gillingham and felt we were really focussed on those small details, the set pieces, everyone was at it, and that is what you need to do against that sort of team.
“I remember the game against Burton, it was a prime example. They were playing for set pieces, long throws, and it was very frustrating because I knew we were better than that.
“Against Gillingham we focused really well on marking the players, the small things that are so important and hopefully that can keep going.”
Bodvarsson has first-hand experience of playing in teams who prefer a more direct approach but admits the football currently being played by Bolton is much more to his taste.
“Personally, if I had to choose, I would pick our style of play – possession-based, attractive football,” he said. “But I have experience of playing different ways. With the national team our identity was physical and direct and defensive, even though that is changing a little now. Millwall was the same.
“Maybe that experience is helping me, or the team, but if I had to choose I’d always pick the way we play here.”
The Icelander is enjoying his football again after his January move to the UniBol and after scoring in two of his last three starts, feels that things are now “starting to click” at his new club.
“As soon as I got that first goal it was a massive relief,” he said, having got off the mark in the 4-0 win against Wimbledon. “I’d been at Millwall for such a long time and it hadn’t happened for me.
“But since I came to Bolton it felt like a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I felt myself again. And when you are feeling that way you don’t over-think things too much, I am just doing what comes naturally and the confidence is there.
“We are playing some really good football, which fits me as well, so my long-term goal now is finish this season as well as possible but then get ready for next season.”
