HE was arguably the biggest and most exciting signing in Bolton Wanderers’ history – a World Cup winner with global recognition.
Twenty years ago, The Reebok got its first look at Youri Djorkaeff, and it was a match made in heaven.
The Frenchman had made his debut at Southampton the previous weekend but had been looking forward to the “atmosphere and noise” of his new home.
And the game did not disappoint. Rod Wallace put Bolton ahead after Andy Cole’s early red card, before Matt Jansen grabbed an equaliser midway through the second half.
Rovers boss Graeme Souness accused Bolton defender Mike Whitlow of “cheating” to get Cole sent off in his post-match press conference.
But a decidedly more serene Djorkaeff was pleased with his first taste of Bolton, revealing two targets before the end of the season.
"First I want Bolton to stay in the Premier League and after that I will leave with France for the World Cup," he said. "I think that is a good challenge for me."
