SUNDERLAND have sacked manager Lee Johnson after their 6-0 defeat at Wanderers on Saturday.
The 40-year-old had been in charge of the Black Cats since December 2020, and left the club this evening alongside assistant head coach Jamie McAllister.
Johnston won 40 of his 78 league games at the Stadium of Light, leading the club to the Papa John’s Trophy last season – the club’s first win at Wembley since 1973.
Sunderland were second in the table when they visited the UniBol but had won only one of their previous four.
Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said: “I would like to thank Lee for his commitment and endeavour over the past 14 months.
"We regret that we have had to take this decision, but felt immediate change was needed.
"We firmly believe that this is in the best interests of Sunderland AFC as we strive to earn promotion this season. Lee and Jamie will always be welcome at the Stadium of Light and they depart with our best wishes.”
