WANDERERS (4-3-3)
JOEL DIXON…4.
Made a save early on - but can’t argue with the fact he cost his side a place in the competition. Who’d be a keeper?
MARLON FOSSEY…6.
Looked full of running in the first half and combined well with Kachunga but ran out of steam after the break. To be expected and should improve.
RICARDO SANTOS…6.
Hardly troubled by the Hartlepool attack. Pace and power dug him out on the odd occasion they got in behind. Need more from him at set pieces, though.
GEORGE JOHNSTON…6.
Back in central defence. Like Santos, kept things tight but not exactly over-exerted. Tried to step out with the ball in the second half.
DECLAN JOHN…5.
Looked off colour again. Whether a confidence problem or just an off-shoot of his Covid lay-off, the Welshman needs to up his game.
NATHAN DELFOUNESO…5.5.
Playing out of position but actually had a remarkably bright first half. He struggled to get into the game at all after the break.
MJ WILLIAMS…6.
Probably needed him to push on and make more of an impact in the final third, as his regular defensive duties were rendered rather null and void.
GEORGE THOMASON…5.5.
First half was decent but the youngster seemed to run out of space and ideas too often against massed ranks in the second half.
ELIAS KACHUNGA…6.
Probably Wanderers’ brightest player in the first 45 minutes but pulled up with an injury after an hour. Sod’s law.
DION CHARLES…6.5.
On a purely footballing basis, this was a good debut. Clearly, what transpired during the day is going to affect what he can offer to Bolton in the short-term, though.
DAPO AFOLAYAN…5.5.
Effective in patches but as he got chopped down time and again, and the chances continued to fall by the wayside, his impact lessened considerably.
Subs: Bakayoko 5, 55 (for Kachunga) – Still looks short on match sharpness.
Doyle 5, 61 (for Charles) – One decent chance.
Gordon 86 (for John).
Not used: Gilks, Baptiste, Gordon, Brockbank, Aimson.
Hartlepool: Killip; Jones, Odusina, Byrne, Francis-Angol; Crawford, Smith, Daly; Grey, Olomola, Molyneux.
Subs: Featherstone 76 (for Smith).
Not used: Boyes, Ferguson, Shelton, Holohan, Fondop.
Referee: Anthony Backhouse – 7/10. No real complaints. Maybe missed a foul on Dion Charles in the first half on the edge of the area but Wanderers' shortcomings were by no means the fault of the officials.
Attendance: 2,529 (369).
