BOLTON Hockey Club’s men’s first were on cloud nine after a thumping victory against Deeside in North West Men’s Three South.
They hit nine without reply with Damien Pearse bagging a hat-trick as they made it 16 goals and none conceded in back-to-back outings.
Bolton started brightly but could not break down a resolute Deeside defence looking for their first win of the campaign.
But they found a way through on 10 minutes when, after some great work down the left by top scorer Rob Lord, the ball was fired into the box to be skilfully deflected into to the top corner by James Beamish, opening his account for the season.
After this the well-drilled Deeside switched to a more defensive formation and it became clear to see why they have given to top sides a good game.
On 15 minutes, Bolton switched up another gear. With fantastic movement from the front three of Pearse, Lee Ramagge and Yusuf Nalla gaps started to appear in the Deeside back line.
The goals then started to come thick and fast for Bolton with Pearse and Ramagge adding two in quick succession.
With 10 minutes to go until half time the midfield duo of Joel Reiss and Scott Mather both also grabbed goals, making it 5-0 at the interval.
After the break Deeside switched to a more pressing formation but the Bolton back four still appeared comfortable on the ball, patiently building play.
Five minutes in Mather completed his brace after some good counter-attacking play and 10 minutes later the skilful Lord added a well-deserved goal.
Soon afterwards Pearse also grabbed his second then, with five minutes to go, pacey target man, Philip Meachin received the ball up on the edge of the D and with a quick turn found Reiss who won Bolton a penalty corner.
A well-worked routine found Pearse unmarked at the back post to complete his treble and and leave the final score 9-0.
The women’s seconds staged a comeback to earn a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Didsbury Northern fourths in North West Women’s Four East.
Didsbury started strongly, with the defending midfield of Jude Gough and Lucy Pickles finding out quickly and having to move the ball around the bank line of Nat Boal, Jo Tanner and Becky Denton.
Within 10 minutes, the hosts broke the deadlock after a goalmouth scramble.
On the restart Bolton moved up the pitch with player-of-the-match, Emily Hawkrigg, advancing strongly up the left wing and placing the ball on a defender’s foot for Bolton penalty corner.
Gough pushed out to the top of the D for skipper Viv Lake to have a straight strike back to Gough bottom left, and she touched the ball into the net but Didsbury’s last man kicked the ball, giving Bolton a penalty stroke. Lu Bull stepped up to take the stroke but could not convert it into a goal.
Didsbury went on the attack again and made Bolton pay for their miss with a second goal to double their advantage going into half time.
After the break, Didsbury were soon on the attack again but were not able to pass Bolton keeper Nina Jones.
And the comeback was on with 10 minutes to go.
A fast ball from Pickles into the D found Lake in the bottom left side of the circle, who managed to roll her defender out and slot the ball neatly under Didsbury’s keeper.
The goal picked Bolton up and gave them renewed confidence.
And, with five minutes to go, they had levelled the scores.
Erin Turner passed to Bull who dived at the ball ,sending it over towards Lake who was able to slap it into the net.
Bolton had fire in them and on the restart, Debbie Green was again attacking the right hand side into the D.
But they had to settle for a draw, leaving them third in the table.
The Women’s first team from Bolton Hockey Club registered their biggest win of the season so far with an 8-1 hammering of City of Manchester in North West Women’s Two South.
They had six different names on the scoresheet on the day as well which was pleasing for the coaching team.
After a slow start, the breakthrough came for Bolton with Chrystal Swaries opening the scoring after Jenny Brookfield fired a great pass into the D where Swaries, diving full length, met the ball on the reverse and sent it through the City of Manchester keeper’s legs.
Brookfield was involved again in Bolton’s second goal with some strong wing play before finding Swaries at the top of the D. Swaries’ shot was saved but Rachel Gibb converted the rebound.
City of Manchester pulled one back following a mazy run before the break.
But the second half saw Bolton score six unanswered goals as they outperformed City of Manchester.
Alex Roe at left back kept the forwards on their toes, sending a strong ball into the middle of the park to Emily Wilkes who transferred the play to Kirsten Price out wide on the right. Price took the opportunity to drive the ball to the back line, winning a penalty corner as she entered the D. Wilkes received the ball at the top of the D and drove to the penalty spot before scoring.
Brookfield got her name on the scoresheet for the fourth goal, after Wilkes played an early ball from outside the top of the D.
Gibb grabbed her second of the game at the back post with Wilkes and Roe again involved in the build-up play and Brookfield’s brace came quickly after with some killer instinct forward play to capitalise on the City of Manchester’s defence being slow to clear their lines.
Swaries turned provider for Bolton’s seventh as she drove into the D from the left and Chloe Frost dispatched the ball with a firm hit through the scrambling City of Manchester keeper.
To complete a dominant Bolton second-half performance, Aldcroft picked the ball up before driving from wide to score to extend the unbeaten start to the season, Wilkes picking up the player-of-the-match honour.
