WANDERERS (4-2-3-1)
JOEL DIXON…4.5.
Lang’s second-half goal may well end up being credited to the Wanderers keeper, who couldn’t sort his feet out quickly enough. HARRY BROCKBANK…3.
Hard to watch. From very early on in the game it seemed his confidence had been sapped, which was a huge shame. Much better than this.
RICARDO SANTOS…4.5.
Made a couple of big blocks but found it tough to keep the shackles on Wyke and didn’t have that usual swagger bringing the ball out from the back.
GEORGE JOHNSTON…4.5.
Just looked over-run at times, struggling when the ball was played into the big gaps between him and Liam Gordon on the left.
LIAM GORDON…4.
Lacked conviction going forward and had swathes of space in behind him at times. Has made progress this season but clearly still has a way to go.
MJ WILLIAMS…5.
Seemed to be fighting a one-man battle at times in the first half and possibly missed the guiding hand of Kieran Lee alongside him.
JOSH SHEEHAN…4.5.
Lost in the mist. Hardly gave the ball away and maybe should have had a penalty but rarely got into positions to do any damage.
AMADOU BAKAYOKO…3.
Made a big error for the first goal and failed to recover from it. There had been a clamour to see him in the side but looked out of sorts on the right.
ANTONI SARCEVIC…4.5.
Hit the bar with a stunning effort and chased without much success. Another one who didn’t waste possession but didn’t ask enough questions of Wigan’s back line.
DAPO AFOLAYAN…4.5.
Tried to make things happen when he got the ball but was often double marked out of the game and struggled to escape the extra attention.
EOIN DOYLE…4.
His one big chance was flagged offside – wrongly, in Ian Evatt’s view. Effort never in question but Bolton’s goalscoring issues have become a concern.
Subs: Isgrove 5.5, 55 (for Brockbank) – Felt like a positive change. Plymouth must be calling.
Kachunga 4, 61 (for Bakayoko) – Struggled to get involved.
Thomason 73 (for Sheehan) – Showed some decent touches after coming on.
Not used: Gilks, Delfouneso, Aimson, Baptiste.
Wigan (4-2-3-1): Amos; Power, Whatmough, Watts, Darikwa; Naylor, Cousins; Lang, Keane, McClean; Wyke.
Subs: Pearce 50 (for Cousins), Massey 84 (for McClean), Humphrys 88 (for Wyke) Not used: Jones, Massey, Jones, Tilt.
Referee: Charles Breakspear 5/10 – Showed some common sense to bring the game to a close when he did. There could have been a lot more stoppage time and more damage done.
Should there have been a handball against Wyke? Should Sheehan have had a penalty? Would it have mattered?
Attendance: 20,892 (4,007).
