NO matter what the competition or opposition, Ian Evatt was not about to complain about racking up a third successive win.
Amadou Bakayoko scored twice as the Whites saw off Liverpool’s Under-21s 4-1 in the Papa John’s Trophy, in a game that showed the strength in depth that Evatt now possesses in his squad.
“It feels nice,” he said. “I thought it was a really good game. Credit to them they posed us technical and tactical problems and we had to find solutions.
“It took a while but our attitude and application was correct and once we found them we won the game well.
“You have to give them some credit because they came here and played with freedom and expression, similar to the way their first team does, movement and rotation, and sometimes in League One you don’t see that type of thing.”
Will Aimson made his debut for Wanderers and Brandon Comley played his first game for the club in 10 months but the quality of football on show for just over 2,000 rain-sodden fans at the UniBol made the evening worthwhile.
“That is a mark of how far we have come, I made 10 changes and you are still saying it is a strong team, which shows what we have got in reserve,” Evatt said.
“We have got Baka back from injury so being able to give him some more minutes is great as well.
“Credit to our lads we showed great professionalism.
“We are all coached the same so they should all know what we expect.
“It is difficult for these boys because they are not used to playing together as a team and building the relationships is tough. I know it’s Liverpool’s Under-21s but they still train together all the time so they have those connections.
“Our communication needs to be stronger at times and that is something we need to improve on.”
Evatt admits a few of the players who came into the side have done their chances of pushing their way into the league line-up no harm at all.
“Every time you step on the pitch on a training ground or a matchday is an opportunity to impress me, impress team-mates, impress the fans, and I think a few players took that chance today, they did well.”
