RALPH Wright – who enjoyed a brief footballing career with Wanderers but who ended up as a team-mate of Pele – has passed away at the age of 72.

The former midfielder was part of the squad which won promotion from the old Third Division under Jimmy Armfield in 1972/73.

He made 34 appearances and scored five goals before moving to the US, where he earned a contract playing for the New York Cosmos.

It was there he formed a friendship with Brazil legend Pele, who would often visit his home for get-togethers during the 1973 NASL season.

After a brief stint back home at Southport, Wright returned to the US to play for Miami Toros and then Dallas Tornado.

He scored in the NASL championship game for Toros and finished up his playing career in his native North East playing for Spennymoor United.

The Bolton Wanderers Former Player’s Association issued a message on their official Facebook page.

“Ralph had quite a football career both here and in the United States. He played for the Wanderers along with, Norwich,Bradford P.A., Stockport and Southport to name few,” it read.

“In the U.S.A., he played with Pele and against George Best, Geoff Hurst, Giorgio Canaglia and other notable stars.

“Our condolences go to his wife, Jean, and his family. A really nice guy who will be missed by all who knew him. Sad news.”
