BURNDEN won the Men’s Super Vets prize at the Terry Nortley Relays at Radcliffe’s Close Park on Bank Holiday Monday.
The team of Andy Dunleavy, Paul Christie and Tony Wall came in under an hour for the four 2.1-mile legs, posting a combined time of 57mins 28secs.
Dunleavy ran the first leg in 13:50 and the anchor leg in 13:54 with Christie’s 15:38 and Wall’s 14:06 sandwiched in between, placing the team 11th in the overall standings out of 78 competing teams.
The next fastest Burnden team also dipped under the hour mark. Adrian Ashburn (14:23), Sarah Watton (14:36), Vicky Hamer (15:07) and Gwen Kinloch (14:31) combined for a total of 58:37.
Two club teams were entered in the Male V40 competition. Chris Greenall (15:28), Lawrence McDonald (15:47), Ged Turner (16:08) and Mark Butler (15:27) posted a total time of 1:02:50, while Andy Warburton ran the last two legs for the other V40 team in 17:35 and 18:54 following Chris Worthington’s 13:54 and Don Nichol’s 17:23 for a total of 1:07:46.
Gayle Gerrard (16:13), Louise Wall (18:27), Diane Wylie (18:00) and Kath Berry (17:50) were the next fastest Burnden team with a combined time of 1:10:30.
Jane Crompton ran her first leg in 18:59, followed by Emma Walker’s 17:21, Gillian Morris’s 17:59 and Andrea Newton’s 19:58, giving the team a total of 1:14:17.
Cheryl Dunleavy was the lead-off runner in the final team, and her 19:57, along with Nicola Hardy’s 21:58, Shirley Robinson’s 22:05 and Jen Forkin’s 20:30, saw them register a total time of 1:24:30.
Jonathan Sangster set new heights of endurance in the 315-kilometre Dragon’s Back five-day ultra following the mountainous spine of Wales from Conwy Castle in the north, through the famous Brecon Beacons to the finish in Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire.
The race, which involves a staggering 15,500 metres of climb, is billed as the toughest five-day mountain running race in the world.
Sangster completed the five stages in 11:42:05, 12:25:42, 12:44:43, 11:47:38 and 12:13:19 – a total of 60:58:00 and a monumental effort.
Mark Jackson took on 105 laps of the track at Leigh Sports Village to complete the Leigh Track Marathon in 4:21:52, while north of the border David Morrison crossed the line at the Edinburgh Marathon in 4:15:11.
Kris Worsley and Craig Philpot ran the Rock 'n' Roll Liverpool Half Marathon and finished in 2:05:23 and 2:05:24 respectively. Emma Walker completed the course in 2:06:17 and Sharon Drew crossed the line in 2:21:24.
Andy Staveley led the way at the first of the four-race Harrock Hill Fell Series over 5.1 miles with a time of 40:53, ahead of Tim Taylor in 47:40 and Mark Butler in 49:58.
