THE EFL is unhappy that Wanderers have failed to rearrange their game against Brentford this week.

League officials warned the club they would have to schedule the match “at the earliest opportunity” after a player strike forced the postponement of the Championship fixture on Saturday.

A provisional date of Wednesday (May 1) was set but concerns over a safety certificate for the ground have forced the club to shelve that plan.

The EFL say they will now decide on Thursday what date the game will be played, although it is understood a meeting of the Safety Advisory Group has been set for Tuesday, May 7, which would indicate May 8 or 9 as the most likely slots.

Wanderers are in hot water with the league over the postponement and their punishment will be decided by an independent panel in the coming weeks.

As the situation is unprecedented, it is unclear what sanctions could be brought against them.

A statement released by the EFL this morning read: “The EFL has this morning confirmed that Bolton Wanderers’ suspended Sky Bet Championship fixture with Brentford will not be played this week.

“The EFL Board will now determine on Thursday, May 2, 2019 as to what arrangements are to be put in place in regards to the fixture and Bolton Wanderers will be instructed accordingly.

“As previously advised EFL Regulations do provide for any League match to be played within four days of the end of the normal playing season (Sunday, May 5, 2019).

“The EFL reserves its position in relation to the club not making the arrangements to play the game at the earliest opportunity and this matter will be brought to the attention of the Independent Disciplinary Commission the club has been referred to at the appropriate time.”
