BOLTON'S Megan Gidney won a bronze medal at the Swedish Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Open.
The teenager reached the junior girls’ doubles semi-finals alongside her partner, Denise Payet.
Having already beaten opponents from the USA and Sweden, the pair had a hard-fought 3-2 (10-12, 11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 11-8) victory over French second seeds Camille Lutz and Prithika Pavade in the quarter-finals.
That secured them a place on the podium, but their hopes of getting silver or gold were dashed when Japanese fourth seeds Kaho Akae and Miwa Harimoto proved too tough in the semis with a convincing 3-0 victory (11-2, 11-6, 11-7).
Gidney also took part in the junior girls’ singles, where she was unlucky to go out in the group stage.
She beat Denmark's Mie Schou Salhauge 3-1 (11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7) but lost her other two matches in deciding sets – 3-2 (11-8, 5-11, 11-9, 6-11, 15-13) to Singapore’s Yoke Ning Janissa Cheng, and 3-2 (7-11, 11-6, 16-18, 11-6, 11-7) to Hanna Kjellson of Sweden.
It put the Bolton girl into the consolation singles event in which she won three matches to reach the semi-finals, where she went down 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-9) to eventual winner Berenice Marteau of France.
