AS a takeover at Bolton Wanderers inched ever-closer to completion, Phil Parkinson admits the prospect of new ownership would come as a huge boost for the whole club.
A statement released on Sunday morning by Ken Anderson confirmed that an agreement to sell his stake in Wanderers’ parent company, Burnden Leisure how now been struck.
It is understood that the Future Ventures consortium headed by Parminder Basran and Sharon Brittan could now take control of the club by next weekend.
Although there are still hurdles to clear for the group, namely due diligence and EFL ratification, there is a confidence within the Bolton camp that fresh impetus could arrive in time to help the club’s survival bid in the Championship.
Wanderers were beaten 2-1 by Leeds United at Elland Road and now sit four points from safety in the Championship with 12 games remaining.
Parkinson is convinced his players can haul themselves out of the relegation zone but reckons their chances would be improved with the possibility of more financial security.
“From my point of view, me, the staff and the players have been through a lot together over the last two-and-a-half years,” he said.
“If a takeover happens, and the club can have some stability, then it would be fantastic news for everybody.
“Being four points from safety after the two games against Leeds and Norwich – I think I would have taken that.
“I’m disappointed we didn’t get a point (against Leeds) but I do think we have still got a decent chance of staying up.”
Leeds’ bizarre came from a deflected shot by Ezgjan Alioski which caught out keeper Remi Matthews.
Parkinson backed the 25-year-old, who has seized the number one shirt since Ben Alnwick picked up a back injury, to bounce back quickly from the disappointment.
“It was a very strange goal,” said the manager, who was sent to the stands by referee Tony Harrington in the latter stages of the game. “He pulled off two great saves in the game and did really well against Norwich last week so we’ll pick him up.
“Keepers make mistakes and they have to move on from them, and Remi will.”
