WANDERERS started the season with a fine 2-1 win against West Brom, thanks to Yanic Wildschut's last-minute strike.

Josh Magennis had opened the scoring with a goal 18 minutes into his debut before Harvey Barnes draw the home side level with a stunner just before half time.

It was the first away victory on the opening day of the season since beating QPR 4-0 in the Premier League - and only the third in nine years for the Whites.

But how did the players rate? Marc Iles gives his verdict.

BEN ALNWICK…7

Had absolutely no chance with the goal but made one big save from Hegazi’s header in the second half to keep his side level.

PAWEL OLKOWSKI…8.5

First games in English football don’t come tougher but the Pole looks to be carved out of teak. Used the ball well, tracked his man, dug in deep. Classy debut.

DAVID WHEATER…8.5

Put his head and body in the way of absolutely everything. Come back from pre-season looking sharp and slim and now wearing the Bolton captain’s armband. Deservedly so.

MARK BEEVERS…8

Big performance from the big man, who made some equally-important challenges in the penalty box when his timing had to be spot on. Encouraging start to the season.

ANDY TAYLOR…8

Serious examination for the full-back but he passed it with flying colours. Another who came back from pre-season looking fit as a fiddle – and it showed.

LUKE MURPHY…7

Signed just a couple of days beforehand and launched straight into the action. The former Leeds United man let no-one down and helped keep a good defensive shape.

JASON LOWE…8.5

Screened the back four imperiously. Tidy in possession, made it tough for West Brom to cut through, and while he won’t grab the same headlines as the goal-scorers, an equally impressive bow.

SAMMY AMEOBI…7

Looked dangerous in the first half and produced a fine cross for Magennis’s goal but failed to shake-off a hip injury and was withdrawn five minutes into the second half.

JOSH VELA…7.5

Covered every inch of the pitch and used the ball sensibly, combining well with Olkowski and Ameobi on the right. Another disciplined display.

WILL BUCKLEY…7 Maybe a question mark against him for letting Barnes have space for the goal but his work-rate down the left was admirable.

JOSH MAGENNIS…8.5 Had fans singing his name after scoring 18 minutes into his first start and his levels of effort never faltered. Chased every lost cause, hassled defenders and held the ball up superbly.
