HIS side may be unbeaten and sitting pretty at the top of the Lancashire Amateur League, but Steve Eccleshare has no intention of counting his chickens just yet.
Old Boltonians extended their unbeaten record in the Premier Division to six games, having taken 16 points from 18. But, even though they saw off local rivals Little Lever 6-2 on Saturday, the manager knows all too well nothing is won this early in the season.
“We’re top of the table and five points clear of Roach Dynamos but that means nothing at this stage,” said Eccleshare, who once again takes charge of the LAL’s inter-league team this weekend.
“We won’t allow ourselves to get complacent, we’ll just keep chopping the games off, one by one.
“It was a tough game on Saturday, it always is against Little Lever, but the problem they have at the moment is keeping 11 players on the pitch. They’ve had a lot sent off already this year and they had one sent off against us at the weekend, though the game was done and dusted by then.”
His side had taken the lead 10 minutes in on Saturday, Matt McLellan netting from Lucas Gaynor’s cross.
Jack Coop levelled things up, scoring in a one-on-one, but Gaynor restored the lead with a fine strike from the edge of the box.
Early in the second half, Rob Taylor’s volley from a similar position made it 3-1 before McLellan hit his second, a brilliant solo run that culminated in a chipped finish over the onrushing keeper.
A half-volley from Tom Allcroft and Dave Warburton’s unerring drive from 30 yards brought up Old Bolts’ fifth and sixth.
Little Lever manager Matt Barnes, who came on as a substitute, at least gave his side something to cheer with an impressive goal to complete the scoring.
Old Bolts’ next match would have seen them travel to champions Failsworth Dynamos, who have not yet won this season. But, with both clubs losing numerous players to Eccleshare’s inter-league squad to face Staffordshire, the fixture will be re-arranged for later in the season.
“Failsworth have got five in the squad, we’ve got seven,” he added.
“It would have been a pretty good time to play them. They’ve had a few bad results, I think they may have become a bit complacent, but they certainly haven’t become bad players overnight.”
Elsewhere, Horwich St Mary’s Victoria suffered defeat at home to Prestwich, who collected their first three points of the season, thanks to Aldair Victorano scoring the only goal of the game.
In Division One, Bolton Wyresdale were 3-2 winners at home to Tottington United.
Kieran Rayner scored twice with Sam Cooper also scoring in a victory that puts Wyresdale in fourth place, behind Valley United on goal difference.
In the Manchester League Premier Division, Jordan McLaughlin scored Bolton County’s goal in their 1-1 draw at home to Old Alts.
In Division Two, Breightmet United were defeated 4-1 by Govan Athletic.
