IT seemed unusually quiet as we made our way down to the Macron.
The Doombar deliberations were not so much full of tension as apprehension.
We’ve made yet another poor start to the season but performances, if not results, have been improving recently with even the Ipswich fans conceding we deserved something.
Playing the only other winless team in the division at home must have given us the best chance to get off the mark and kick start our season.
Lose this one and we could start thinking of League One again next season.
The chairman, manager and players had been trying to rally the fans to get behind the team this week and we were up for it.
So were the team for the first 20 minutes with a couple of half chances saved or squandered.
But Brentford battled back into the game and dominated from thereon.
The Bees were buzzing and they got three cracking goals and, in truth, it could have been a cricket score.
We spent the remainder of the match trying to keep the score down.
We didn’t look like scoring as the match turned into our most abject performance for a long while.
No wins, no goals for over a month, a defence you can drive a bus through.
A 100-per-cent loss record at Fortress Macron. What is going on?
We knew we would be in for a hard season and that we would have to fight for every single point.
But should it be this hard? Performances like this against potential relegation rivals are difficult for the fans to take.
It’s difficult to see where the next goal is coming from, never mind the next point.
Last year’s heroes have gone to zeroes in less than 10 matches.
We can all moan about team selection and tactics but at the end of the day, that is Phil Parkinson’s responsibility.
The players have to accept their share of responsibility for their performances.
Our options are limited due to the financial problems but everyone must pull together.
United we stand, divided we fall. Can we bring in out-of-contract players who can make a difference?
Can we get our injured players back? Can Phil Parkinson change something? Can the players up their game?
I hope so because I’m heading for Ashton Gate on Tuesday where we lost 6-0 last time we played Bristol City there.
