THE second week of the season threw up some fascinating fixtures, none more so than in the Division One game between the fiercest of rivals in recent years.
The Sunday League’s two dominant sides of the last few seasons, Farnworth United and Queen Anne, met at Ladybridge in Lostock.
Anybody who thought this would be a close game were mistaken as last years champion’s Queen Anne went on the attack from the first minute and by the final whistle had gone on a 10-goal rout, Farnworth managing just one goal in response.
Mark Truffas led the way for Queen Anne, netting a hat-trick. There were braces for Chris Donohue and Dev Southerman, with the other goals coming from Nial Callaghan, Kieron Edwards and Carlton Evans.
Jon Stevenson scored the consolation goal for Farnworth United, whose manager Paul Davis said: “Unfortunately we will have to put it down to a bad day at the office but we will go again next week.”
On Harper Green, D Havilland entertained Little Hulton side Top Club in a much tighter affair.
And it was the Farnworth side coming out on top, winning 5-3 thanks to Glen Matthews, who found the net four times.
Top Club had started the game the stronger and within five minutes they took the lead through Adam Doyle.
Midway through the first half Matthews hit a superb 25-yard shot straight into the top corner, his thunderbolt giving the keeper no chance.
And as if to prove it was no fluke, 10 minutes later Matthews found himself in the same position and repeated the same shot to give D Havilland a 2-1 lead at half time.
As the second half got under way Top Club again came out of the blocks better as they were pressing for an equaliser.
That came 10 minutes into the half, when Jake Hardman found himself on the edge of the penalty area.
He beat the defender and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to ensure the game was perfectly poised with half an hour to go.
But Matthews had clearly decided there was only going to be one hero and one team winning the game and with 20 minutes left on the clock he completed his hat-trick to put D Havilland 3-2 ahead.
It was 4-2 minutes later, Matthews grabbing his fourth after some excellent work from Danny Lowe. Matthews then repaid the favour, turning provider as Lowe got himself on the scoresheet, latching on to his team-mate’s excellent through ball and making no mistake with a clinical finish.
With virtually the last kick of the game Doyle scored his second to add some respectability to the score for Top Club but it was D Havilland who came away with the points.
The other game played in Division One saw Adlington side Bridge Celtic and Newbury FC fight out a 2-2 draw with goals from Kane Wilkinson and Dave English for Bridge Celtic and Theo Myers adding to an own goal for Newbury.
In Division Two the new and much-fancied Barr Hill were pitted against one of the pre-season favourites, Wellington FC.
Although the Salford side collected the three points from a 3-0 victory the match was a much closer affair than the scoreline suggests.
Giving a decent account of themselves, Wellington missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed for offside, a contentious decision which was marginal.
The Barr Hill scorers were David Vanden, Reuben Rose and Tom Smith-Makin.
The other game in Division Two saw Bolton Town edged out 2-1 at home to Deane FC.
The Deane scorers were Nathan Hatton and Adam Taylor while John Yates replied for Bolton Town.
