WANDERERS are in line for a six-figure pay-out on Zach Clough after he helped Nottingham Forest secure their Championship survival.
The Bolton News understands a “substantial” bonus will be paid out after the East Midlanders avoided the drop on the final day of the season at Blackburn Rovers’ expense.
Clough scored four goals in nine starts at the City Ground since his January deadline day move for £3million – which has since been topped up by another appearance-related payment.
The Whites may have to wait for their latest windfall, however, with Forest in the grip of a takeover by Greek shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis.
Sources at the Macron say the bonus-laden deal which took Clough to Forest will continue to provide on the striker’s appearances for a while to come.
Rob Holding’s move to Arsenal last summer has similar incentives built in, and both players have sell-on clauses.
Meanwhile, academy chief Jimmy Phillips has confirmed five young scholars have been offered the opportunity of an extra year by Wanderers.
“We have offered third-year scholarships to five of our players, three of which are from the Bolton area – Cole Lonsdale, Harry Brockbank and Jack Earing,” he told The Bolton News.
“We’ve also offered an extra year to Alex Samizadeh, from Manchester, and Ryan White, from Blackpool, so there’s a real North West feel to the lads we’ve kept on at the club.”
Wanderers’ development squad, coached by David Lee, just missed out on a play-off spot this year, while Nicky Spooner’s Under-18s also finished a creditable fourth in their league.
And Phillips will be keeping a close eye on the five players offered an extra 12 months at the club in what he believes is a crucial time in their footballing career.
“It’s a big year for the players because I have seen in the past players who struggled in their first and second year really blossom in their third,” he said.
“When I look back at Joey O’Brien and Nicky Hunt it wasn’t until the third year of their scholarship did they really show what they were capable of on a football field.
“It’s vital we kept those boys on and there’s a lot of development to take place.”
