WE crossed the Pennines for the first six-pointer of the season against a team in bigger turmoil than us in Leeds United.
The mood was pessimistic from both sets of fans as we each thought that we would lose and that we are in for a battle against relegation.
It was made worse as the Drysalters has changed to a dreaded ‘Matchday menu’, basically chips or burgers in starter portions.
The match lived up to its pre-match billing of a struggle between two poor sides.
Having said that, we were the better team and the three points were there for the taking, if we could have encouraged someone to stick the ball in the net.
Their goal was a slow, driven cross from ex-Wanderer Stephen Warnock which surprisingly eluded Adam Bogdan.
Joe Mason had the best two opportunities in the first half, forcing good saves out of Marco Silvestri.
At the end Jermaine Beckford and Chung-Yong Lee were similarly thwarted in a mad scramble.
It was a tale of missed chances but it was also a tale of too few chances and too many players off form.
The defence was better, despite losing David Wheater early on, but that was more a reflection of Leeds’ lack of threat.
I think most other Championship teams would have stuffed Leeds on the day.
We had to wait 11 matches for our first league win last season and a similar wait is looking likely this season.
Dougie Freedman has to sort it out. It’s his team now. He is not getting the best out of the players he has got.
Why do we have to get Valentine’s Day out of the way before we start playing decent football?
At least the Capital One Cup draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the thrid round has given us supporters something to look forward to, as we plan our day out in London in this increasingly-depressing season.
