Morrisey and Johnny Marr have issued an update on a possible reunion of The Smiths following calls for the band's return after similar news from Oasis earlier this week.

After 15 years, Liam and Noel Gallagher confirmed on Tuesday (August 27) that Oasis would be reuniting and going on a UK and Ireland tour in 2025.

The Oasis tour includes dates in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin.

Morrisey and Johnny Marr issue update on The Smith reunion

Following news of the Oasis reunion, fans of The Smiths have called for the fellow Manchester band to do the same.

Marr responded to these claims by posting a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of Reform UK leader Nigel Farage - hinting that Morrissey’s political views were the stumbling block for a Smiths reunion, Rolling Stones reported.

However, a post on Morrisey's website, has claimed that a Smiths reunion offer landed on both he and Marr’s desks earlier this summer.

Morrisey is said to have accepted the proposal, but Marr did not.

The statement reads: “In June 2024 AEG Entertainment Group made a lucrative offer to both Morrissey and Marr to tour worldwide as ‘The Smiths’ throughout 2025.

“Morrissey said Yes to the offer; Marr ignored the offer.

“Morrissey undertakes a largely sold out tour of the USA in November.
