For many people, the first freshly brewed cup in the morning is an important part of the day.

But for others, it can be the stuff of nightmares because if you’re sensitive to caffeine it can often lead to the likes of headaches and jitters.

If you’re looking to switch up your morning brew or are just interested to know the difference, this is how much more caffeine tea has than coffee.

How much more caffeine does tea have than coffee?

“Like for like, a cup of coffee has around double the amount of caffeine compared to black tea, with an average of 95mg per cup,” reports BBC Good Food.

“Like tea, a lot of factors can influence the caffeine content of coffee including the type of coffee beans, the roasting process and the type of coffee.

“For example, a shot of espresso contains about 63mg of caffeine and a cup of instant coffee between 30-90mg.”

But black tea typically has the highest caffeine content among teas and tends to have around 40-60mg of caffeine in a standard 8-ounce cup of tea, explains Red Rose Tea.

As you might have expected, it’s decaf tea that has the least amount of caffeine.

This is because it’s had most of its caffeine removed.

“It's important to note that while decaf tea does contain less caffeine that regular tea, it's not completely caffeine-free,” comments Red Rose Tea.

“Some small amounts of caffeine may still be present in decaf tea, although the exact amount can vary depending on the specific tea and the decaffeination method used.”

Amount of caffeine in different teas per 8-ounce cup

  • Black tea: 40-60 mg of caffeine
  • Oolong tea: 30-50 mg of caffeine
  • Green tea: 30-50 mg of caffeine
  • White tea: 25-40 mg of caffeine
  • Decaffeinated black tea: less than 4mg of caffeine
  • Decaffeinated green tea: less than 4mg of caffeine

Is green tea very high in caffeine?

Green tea usually has less caffeine than black or oolong tea with around 30-50 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.

It also has a considerably lower amount of caffeine compared to coffee.

However, matcha green tea, which normally comes in a bright green powder form, is much stronger with around 35mg per half a teaspoon.
