The RSPCA has started an investigation after a fox was discovered dead in a bin bag with a dog lead around its neck in Little Hulton.

A railway worker came across the sad scene on an area of wasteland close to Aspinall Crescent at around 10.30am on March 20.

The fox, a female, was discovered dead in a bin bag with a dog lead around its neck, although the cause of death is unknown at this time.

RSPCA inspector Vicki Brooks, who is involved in the investigation, said the circumstances meant the case is to be treated as suspicious.

Ms Brooks said: "This was an extremely upsetting sight and we would like to thank the concerned person who rang us to report it." 

She added: "The dog lead around this poor fox's neck had been pulled extremely tightly, although we can't say how she died or whether strangulation was the cause.

"As she was on a lead it's possible she was being used to fight with other animals, although no other obvious injuries were present. Or she could have been kept as a pet, which is something we would most definitely not encourage.

"The circumstances are worrying and I am keen to speak to anyone who has first-hand knowledge about this incident to contact us so we can progress our enquiries and determine if any wildlife offences have been committed."

The incident is the latest in a line of animals discovered dead in the area.

In September 2022, an American bulldog was discovered dumped in a pushchair in Deane. 

In December 2022, a boxer was discovered dumped in a suitcase in Clifton.
