ANDY Westmoreland and Steph Gill are blazing a trail in the level mixed doubles of the Bolton Tennis Tournament.
After beating the father and daughter pairing of Phil and Sara Shacklady in the first round, they came up against third seeds Phil Rimmer and Lisa Cartwright in a match that finihsed late on Monday night and which produced a shock result.
The seeded pair took the first set 6-3, but Westmoreland and Gill stormed back to take the next two 6-4 for an impressive win.
Tuesday night’s action saw Holcombe Brook’s Megan Ingham beat Lostock ’s Julia Sabery 6-3 6-1 in the girls’ under-18s singles.
In the men’s singles second seed Matthew Boyle beat David Lloyd's Dan Keenan 6-3 6-3 while Lostocks's Adam Francis impressively reached the semi finals for the first time with a 6-3 6-3 victory over David Jameson and will now meet top seed John Shacklady for a place in the final.
The Bradshaw pairing of a junior Amy Hadjinicolaou and Danielle Davies progressed to the semi finals of the ladies handicap doubles.
Despite giving a point in every game to their opponents Deborah Leighton and Janet Riley from David Lloyd, the Bradshaw pair won by a surprisingly comfortable margin 6-3 6-1.
In the handicap mixed competition a junior combination of last year's winner Ryan Costello who paired with Chloe Coton beat David Lloyd's Nigel Senior and Lisa Stevenson 6-4 6-3. Senior and Stevenson went straight back on to play a late handicap veterans mixed match against Andy Taylor and Julia Bennison which was level at one set all when play was suspended until tonight.
