KELLY Tidy played a major role as Europe’s golfers completed an unprecedented clean sweep of major trophies against America when Britain and Ireland’s women amateurs came from behind to win back the Curtis Cup at Nairn.
The 20-year-old English Amateur Champion from Harwood won the first of yesterday’s eight singles, beating America’s Austin Ernst 2&1 to pave the way for a 10.5-9.5 home triumph – their first success in the women’s amateur challenge for 16 years, adding the Curtis Cup to the Ryder, Solheim and Walker Cups.
It is the first time in the history of golf that Europe has held all the major trophies in which they compete against USA.
It was a victory that looked unlikely on Friday when the Americans led 4-0 and looked set for a clean sweep.
Tidy, partnering Amy Boulden, lost her foursomes match by one hole to Ernst and Brooke Pancake. But she recovered later in the day to claim the first of three vital victories, partnering Holy Clyburn to a 2&1 success over Pancake and Erica Popson in the fourballs.
The Tidy-Clyburn partnership delivered the goods again on Saturday when they won another fourball (1-up) against Emily Tubert and Amy Anderson to help the hosts end the day trailing by just 6.5-5.5 and set up an historic final day.
