BOLTON Wanderers fans could bag a slice of the club’s history when rare artefacts go under the hammer next month.

But the items will not come cheap.

One lot, which could be worth as much as £1,200, is a piece of card dating back to 1892, signed by three Bolton Wanderers players and eight players from the opposing team, Newton Heath — which later became Manchester United.

It was signed at the Manchester Senior Cup final on April 15 at the Ardwick Ground, in Hyde. Newton Heath beat Wanderers, to be cup winners for the third year running.

The second lot, with a guide price of £360 to £400, includes the signed menu from the team’s victory dinner at London’s Cafe Royal on May 3, 1958, just after they had beaten Manchester United 2-0 in the FA Cup final. Team hero Nat Lofthouse, chairman Harry Warburton, manager Bill Ridding and players Roy Hartle, Roy Parry, Warwick Rimmer, John Higgins, Dennis Stevens, Eddie Hopkinson, Tommy Banks, Brian Birch, Derek Hennin and Bryan Edwards also signed the menu. The lot includes the programme, song sheet, and newspapers together with a programme for Bolton Wanderers player Harold Hassall’s testimonial, on April 23, 1957.

The items will be sold at Bonhams sale in Chester on February 22, and bids can be made online.

Christopher Hayes, of Bonhams, said: “Collectors always want an item that is in pristine condition and the menu is like new — it is one of the best examples that I have seen from that final. The programme and songsheet are also in good condition. The signed card from 1892 has only come to us recently. It is unusual for signed items from that time to come to light — it is rare and it could do very well.”
