SHOPPERS could have been forgiven for thinking they were in danger of being “exterminated” on Saturday.
A Dalek, the arch enemy of science-fiction character Doctor Who, was on the loose in Bolton town centre.
But the Dalek was not looking for the Timelord, but to officially open a science fiction and fantasy shop in St Andrew’s Court.
Omega Collectibles is at Bowker’s Row and stocks books, toys and DVDs linked to cult TV films and comics, including Star Wars and Star Trek, plus Marvel and DC publications.
Ken Hampson, who is behind the venture, said: “Science fiction appeals to children of all ages.
“A friend of ours has a Dalek, and we invited him to promote the shop which worked by attracting a lot of attention.” Shoppers found themselves looking twice.
Janet Derbyshire, aged 87, from Atherton, laughed: “We thought the Daleks had landed.”
Faye Heywood, aged 10, from Heaton, said: “I was quite surprised to see the Dalek, but this one wasn’t scary.”
Her friend, Evie Pendlebury, aged 11, from Heaton, added: “When Faye said there was a Dalek, I thought she was joking!”
