JUSSI Jaaskelainen is confident Nicolas Anelka will live up to his record-breaking transfer fee.

Wanderers' longest serving player believes the club's most expensive signing will deliver the goods, just as soon as his team-mates tune into his wavelength.

"We just have to keep giving Nicolas the right service, because he will score goals," Jaaskelainen said.

"He is the best goalscorer I have ever seen in our team, but we must give him the service."

Anelka, who had precious few chances in his first two Premiership games, opened his Whites account with the injury time goal that capped a 3-1 Carling Cup win at Walsall on Tuesday.

It was a flattering win for the Whites but a result the likes of Manchester City, Fulham, Wigan and Middlesbrough would have envied after they crashed out to lower league sides.

With six changes and three debutants, it took Wanderers time to get into any sort of rhythm, but Anelka's hard-working performance was both encouraging and necessary, since he still considers himself short of match practice and full fitness.

That he kept plugging away until he got his reward in the first minute of overtime delighted Sam Allardyce and his team-mates who are all anxious to see him produce the goods.

There have already been signs that Anelka is fashioning a potentially prolific partnership with El-Hadji Diouf and Jaaskelainen, for one, believes that, with Kevin Davies back in harness, Wanderers have what it takes to become the first team this season to breach the Portsmouth defence at Fratton Park on Monday.

"Diouffy's back to his best and that's good to see because he's a quality player," said the Whites number one.

"And it's going to be good to have Davo back because we've missed him, especially on set-plays.

"We wasted a lot against Middlesbrough when we tried a few quick free kicks that didn't work. We just need to get back to the quality delivery that has brought us so many goals in the past."

Wanderers have been less than convincing in recent performances but Jaaskelainen, who set a target of 15 points from the first 10 games, says eight from five is a promising start. "We are on course," he added.

"Obviously we would have been happier if we could have taken three points against Middlesbrough.

"But, for me, there's only been one disappointing game and that was away to Charlton when we didn't take our chances.

"But we can get a result at Portsmouth. Hopefully Monday will be their first slip-up."
