STELIOS Giannakopolous must have left the Reebok on Saturday evening wondering just what has happened to his beloved Wanderers since he waved farewell in 2008 after 177 appearances for the club.
The diminutive Greece international – a European Championship winner in 2004 and now the president of the Greek PFA – played a significant role in Wanderers success (just ask Arsenal) and was a key member of the team that became a formidable Premier League force.
He was a member of a Bolton side that, above all else, made the Reebok a fortress and which revelled in upsetting some of the best teams in the land as they blazed a trail into Europe.
Stelios received a magnificent reception from the Bolton crowd when he accompanied Michael Johansen, another popular little wide man who made a big impact in his time with Wanderers, to make the half-time draw.
But he could have been forgiven for scratching his trademark shaven head as he perused his old team’s current home run, stretching back into last season, of played seven lost seven. It’s as worrying as it is abysmal.
