One of the greatest tragedies to hit Bolton in recent years was the devastating fire at the Top Storey night club in Crown Street, Bolton on May 1, 1961 which killed 19 people.
Four people survived after jumping 80 feet into the River Croal and four others were killed when they attempted to save themselves. An inquest returned open verdicts on the dead amid rumours, never proved, that the fire was started deliberately.
