THIS two-disc box set contains a brace of classic Dr Who stories which has our time travelling hero landing on earth.
The first story comes from the First Doctor’s era, and William Hartnell’s final series.
The Gunfighters is a four-part story originally broadcast in the spring of 1966 and finds the Doctor – along with Steven (Peter Purves) and Dodo (Jackie Lane) – arriving in Tombstone in 1881.
The Doctor, who is suffering from toothache, seeks out the local dentist, who just happens to be the infamous Doc Halliday.
With Johnny Ringo and Wyatt Earp in town, all events start to lead up to the Gunfight at the OK Corral.
A historical note: this story was the last in which the individual episodes had their own titles.
Fast forward to January 1984, and a two-part story from Peter Davison’s last series as the Fifth Doctor called The Awakening.
Arriving in the present-day village of Little Hodcombe, the Doctor and his companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) are visiting Tegan’s grandfather, but he is missing.
A war game is in progress, recreating a Civil War battle from 1643.
History and the present meet head on as the malevolent Malus feeds on the villagers fears and Tegan is destined to be a human sacrifice.
Polly James (The Liver Birds) stars in this story.
As usual, there are loads of extras, including Making Of documentaries and Noel Edmond’s Golden Egg Awards, when a horse used in the filming of The Awakening wouldn’t stay still and it demolishing a lych-gate became one of the BBC’s most-shown outtakes.
Release date: June 20th 2011.
Catalogue Number: BBCDVD3380.
