CREW members of HMS Dido will be awarded a prestigious medal in Bolton this week.
The former seamen will be awarded the Pingat Jasa Malaysian for their service in Malaysia at the start of the 1960s.
The Mayor of Bolton will present 21 medals on the town hall steps on April 30.
It will also mark the 70th anniversary of Bolton’s association with the Dido.
In just seven days in 1941, during the Second World War, the people of Bolton raised more than £1 million for the country’s war chest. It was dubbed Warship Week and the money raised by the people of Bolton allowed the town to adopt a warship — HMS Dido.
HMS Dido was scrapped in 1958, but three years later, a second HMS Dido was launched.
This new anti-submarine frigate was also adopted by the town.
One of the new Dido’s first cruises was to the Far East, where she saw active duty in helping to suppress the Malaysian uprising.
